Basic Information

The light-duty course is a 2 day course designed to fit the needs of towers of all experience levels. Towers new to the field will gain a valuable overview of their job including the basics of equipment and towing and recovery. Experienced towers will learn some new “tricks of the trade” as well as up-to-date information on safely towing today’s new cars and trucks.

This course includes both classroom and hands-on segments.  

The course is set up in 12 separate modules including:  

  • Professional image, appearance and driver safety
  • Concepts of levers
  • Types and classifications of tow trucks
  • Proper utilization of chains, cables, hooks, straps, and winches
  • Principles of basic snatch-block use
  • Procedures for proper hook-up of cars, vans and light-duty trucks
  • Identification of drive trains and towing procedures
  • Techniques of light-duty recovery
  • Loading, unloading and securement of vehicles on car carriers
  • On-scene safety
  • Safe driving techniques
  • Documentation and proper invoicing

 Materials Needed:

  • Hand out materials are provided to students.
  • Certification can be obtained through the TRAA National Ceritfication or the International Towing Institute.

Recommended Audience

Individuals new to the Towing and Recovery industry as well as experienced towers.  

Cost:

Depending on the number of students, length of class, level of experience the daily rate for the light-duty course ranges from $1000-$3,000 per day plus reasonable travel expenses.
