Basic Information

The heavy-duty course is a 2-3 day course designed to fit the needs of towers of all experience levels. Towers new to the field will gain a valuable overview of their job including the basics of equipment, towing and recovery. Experienced towers will learn some new “tricks of the trade” as well as up-to-date information on safely towing today’s trucks.

This course includes both classroom and hands-on segments.  

The course is set up in 12 separate modules including:  

  • Driver responsibility and safety
  • Concepts of levers
  • Types, sizes, and designs of tow trucks
  • Drive train requirements
  • Identification of various truck brake systems and proper towing procedures
  • Suspension system identification and towing requirements
  • Hook-up procedures for all heavy vehicles
  • Identification, inspection, and proper use of chains, cable, and straps
  • Advanced snatch-block uses and techniques
  • Concepts and techniques of heavy-duty recovery
  • Basic skills of air cushion usage
  • On scene safety

Materials Needed:

  • Hand out materials are provided to students.
  • Certification may be obtained through the TRAA National Certification

Recommended Audience

Individuals new to the Towing and Recovery industry as well as experienced towers who have a CDL

Cost:

Depending on the number of students, length of class, level of experience the daily rate for the light-duty course ranges from $1500-$3,000 per day plus reasonable travel expenses.
